Mail service is critical to prison life, giving incarcerated people a rare window to the outside world and a tactile connection to family members and loved ones. Pilots of new for-profit products from private prison companies “tend to happen unbeknownst to most of the public,” explained Wanda Bertram, communications strategist for the Prison Policy Initiative. But despite stated goals to remove for-profit companies from incarceration, the Biden administration has yet to reverse the program, and in a statement to the Prospect, the BOP said that it is actively considering an expansion, pending funding. The one-year pilot program, under way in two federal corrections facilities, started under the Trump administration in March 2020. A company called Smart Communications has an exclusive pilot program with the federal Bureau of Prisons (BOP) called MailGuard, which eliminates nonlegal physical mail in federal prison facilities and transfers it to either crude paper printouts or electronic files accessed through tablets or kiosks. One such contractor is poised to gain control of the means by which people communicate with those in the federal prison system. Critics charge that these contractors prioritize their own balance sheets over the well-being of prisoners and their families, and that the services they provide are often exploitative, of low quality, and infringe on inmates’ civil rights. Food, medicine, telecommunications, banking, and practically every other service for incarcerated people are almost entirely privatized, through a network of subcontractors. “e must reduce profit-based incentives to incarcerate by phasing out the Federal Government’s reliance on privately operated criminal detention facilities,” the order stated.īut the profit motive will still exist in the federal prison system, even after private prison operations contracts are exhausted. ![]() This creates a sense of responsibility and prepares them for life in the community. In his first-week blitz of executive actions, Joe Biden directed the Justice Department to not renew federal contracts with the private prison industry. The routine of minimum security inmates is less restrictive. There is no barbed wired fence and there are no armed officers, since inmates in these institutions have been deemed very low risk. These penitentiaries are often like small communities where inmates live in living units (houses) in groups of seven or eight. Daily life is much like that in maximum security penitentiaries.įinally, the minimum security institutions play a very important role in the process for returning offenders to the community. Officers are not armed, although weapons are available – under lock and key – in specific locations. In medium security insitutions, while the site is fenced as well, the rules are less restrictive. Also, the schedules that govern an inmate’s day-to-day routine are stricter. The buildings are surrounded by a barbed-wire fence, correctional officers are armed and posted in towers or other strategic surveillance locations. Maximum security institutions are the most restrictive since they house individuals who pose the greatest risk of escape and hence the greatest danger to society. ![]() 21-131, the Presiding Judge has appointed the Clerk as the Jury Commissioner for Santa Cruz County. ![]() This condition can be seen in horses with heaves due to diaphragmatic fatigue or failure. Externally the abdominal component of breathing moves outward passively with exhalation, and is drawn inward passively upon inspiration. Respiratory failure may ensue if increased load (obstruction, stress, exercise) is imposed on this situation. The rib cage moves appropriately / in synchrony with inspiratory and expiratory flow. O Paradoxical breathing – diaphragm is weakened or paralyzed (lesions involving C3-5 or phrenic nerve(s)), so it is displaced cranially rather than caudally during inspiration in opposite phase from rib cage. ![]() O Rib cage leads abdomen (uncommon finding)– diaphragmatic fatigue or paralysis, such that intercostals muscles drive ventilation, and abdominal compartment moves in the opposite direction (see Paradoxical breathing). O Abdominal leads rib (common finding) – increased respiratory drive with airway obstruction results in strong dominance of diaphragmatic contraction causing indrawing of chest wall in particular where chest wall compliance is high (neonates, for example). Recruitment of accessory inspiratory muscles (scalenus) and expiratory muscles (rectus abdominus). O Synchronous rib and abdominal movement – hyperpnea in response to hypoxemia, hypercapnia, pain, excitement, and hyper-thermia. O it is also heightened with chest wall / pleural restriction (rib fractures, pleuropneumonia, trauma, and after surgical invasion (thoracotomy) of the chest cavity. O typically increased abdominal effort is associated with lower airway obstruction O abdominal effort is typically accentuated during expiration O recruitment of accessory muscles such as the rectus abdominus during expiration O increased force and length of excursions of the diaphragm Head – neck is maintained in a natural (slightly flexed) posture. Nasal flaring is just barely discernible during inspiration. ![]() There is near equal contribution from the rib cage and abdomen, although the abdominal component may be more evident clinically during quiet breathing. In particular, note the contribution of the rib cage and abdomen to ventilation, the animal's head position (e.g., is it extended to promote air intake), and the extent of nasal flaring. It is especially useful if the animal is standing during this examination. Stand back from the animal and observe the breathing pattern from both sides and if possible from the top.
![]() past Marquette Park to Fort Mackinac (costs $10 enter the fort so we passed), and made a right on Huron Road to the Arch Rock Bicycle Trail. The crowds on Main Street was overwhelming but they thin out as you climb the uphill away from town. We figured it’s much easier to walk than bike uphill. After biking the island’s lakefront, we returned our tandem bikes and decided to explore on foot. Mackinac Island is a rather hilly island, with its flattest areas being its perimeter along Lake Huron. Exploring the Rest of Mackinac Island on Foot ![]() □ But first, you gotta climb these ~200 steps. Also formed during the post-glacial period, this is a small cave with two rounded hollows stacked on one another. You will, of course, have to carry your bike down to get back on the lakefront trail.Īnother stop that I would highly recommend if you’re as crazy about rocks as I am is Devil’s Kitchen. This was a rock very similar to what I had seen in Capri, Italy a few years back but somehow geological features like this never fail to amaze me! If you are strong enough to carry your bike up the ~200 steps, there is a flat, wooded trail called the Arch Rock Bicycle Trail that you can explore. Park your bike at the bottom of the ~200 steps leading to the top of Arch Rock. It is a natural limestone arch formed during the post-glacial period. The entire ride was only 8 miles long, but it took us about two hours to complete as we stopped for photos.Īrch Rock was our first stop, and one that no one should miss despite the crowds. □ We stopped many times to admire the beautiful rock formations and watch people relaxing by the beach, book in hand, listening to the sound of waves. We biked in a counter clockwise direction around the island, along the shores of Lake Huron. Later on we biked under a canopy of trees to Mission Point Resort. Once we got the hang of biking in tandem, we were on our way west of Main Street, past Marquette Park and Fort Mackinac towards the beautiful Victorian homes by St Anne Church. Seeing those people in kayaks made me want to kayak the perimeter of the island too… □ We biked the perimeter of the Island along the pristine Lake Huron. But once we got the hang of it, it became a lot of fun! It’s even better for the person riding behind (ahem, me) as all you need to do is pedal! The person in front navigates and does most of the work. It was very bumpy learning how to communicate throughout the ride and learn to pedal together and stop on the same side every time. And so, we have attributed the tandem bike ride to resolving trust issues. Steve took the front seat as I was too short for it, so I had to trust him with my life! As you probably already know, trusting someone else to take care of me is not my strength. It was much more challenging than we expected! The bike seemed very sensitive to any sort of jerk. The bike wasn’t in the best condition.Īnyway, with a gigantic tandem bike now in our hands, we had to figure out how to maneuver the thing through the Independence Day crowds on Main Street with horses, pedestrians and other bikers emerging from all directions. It was the cheapest bike rental shop we found, but keep in mind that you get what you pay for. We found a good deal (everything on the island is overpriced anyway) at Ryba’s Bicycle Rental and managed to rent a tandem bike for approximately 2.5 hours for $28. We knew we wanted to try out the tandem bike having seen it elsewhere before. Once we got to the island we had a quick lunch and started shopping for bike rentals. You get there by boat… …and then hop on a horse carriage! Or you can bike. They even have private horse carriages for charter. Our campground did too, and I’d highly encourage utilizing the shuttle to help mitigate the congested parking situation at the many parking lots by the pier.Īs you already know, Mackinac Island is a carless island, so you cannot bring your car over, but you can bring your bike! To get around the island, you can either walk, bike, or ride a horse carriage. ![]() Most hotels and campgrounds in Mackinaw City that are located near the pier have free shuttles taking passengers to the ferry. Our ferry ride from Mackinaw City to Mackinaw Island on Lake Huron took approximately 20 minutes. We bought our ferry tickets the day of our trip and they were $25 per adult roundtrip ticket. From May through September, there are frequent Mackinac Island-bound ferries departing from both cities. Mackinac Island is situated in Lake Huron, like the tip of a triangle connecting the lakeside cities of Mackinaw City and St Ignace. ![]() Taste: Herbal hop bitterness with a spicy greens character (arugula, dandelion greens). ![]() Smell: Citrus peel, orange marmalade, candied fruit, toasty caramel malt, floral hops.
